Harry Shearer’s mother Dora Warren was a book keeper and father was named Mack Shearer. He’s of Jewish ancestry.

Harry made his acting debut in 1950s as a child actor. His early appearances were on ‘The Robe’ and ‘The Jack Benny Program’. On the TV show ‘Leave it to Beaver’, Harry portrayed the predecessor to the Eddie Haskell. He later became a member of the Los Angeles radio comedy group ‘The Credibility Gap’. He also wrote ‘Fernwood 2-Night’ and ‘Laverne and Shirley’. In 1979, Saturday Night Live hired Harry as a writer and cast member, replacing John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. He left ‘Saturday Night Live’ due to some reasons and returned to the series in the 1984-85 season. But, he soon left the show again.

In the 1984 film ‘This Is Spinal Tap’, Harry Shearer made an important appearance. He also served as the co-creator and co-writer of the movie. He was next seen in the 2003 spoof ‘A Mighty Wind’ along with ‘This is Spinal Trip’ cast members. In 2006, Harry played a major role on ‘For Your Consideration’. His next appearances were on two specials for Cinemax. He directed the entire six-episode cable series, ‘The History of White People in America’. Harry also co-wrote and directed Paul Shaffer’s fantasy special “Viva Shaf Vegas”. His first theatrical feature was Teddy Bears’ Picnic. He wrote and directed it as well.

Harry Shearer is the author of three books namely ‘Man Bites Town’ (a collection of his Los Angeles Times Magazine columns), ‘It’s the Stupidity, Stupid’, and ‘Not Enough Indians’, a comic novel about Native Americans and gambling.

In 1989, Harry Shearer joined the cast of ‘The Simpsons’ as a voice actor. On ‘The Simpsons’, he gave his voice to ‘Mr. Burns’, ‘Waylon Smithers’, ‘Ned Flanders’, ‘Reverend Timothy Lovejoy’, ‘Kent Brockman’, ‘Dr. Julius Hibbert’, ‘Dr. Marvin Monroe’, ‘Lenny Leonard’, ‘Principal Seymour Skinner’, ‘Otto Mann’ and ‘Rainier Wolfcastle’ among others.

Harry guest starred on ‘Friends’. He was also seen in ‘Godzilla’. He has been hosting the public radio comedy/music program ‘Le Show since 1983. He also serves as the regular announcer for TV Land and a contributing blogger at ‘The Huffington Post’.

In 1995, Shearer made an appearance in the Australian comedy series ‘Frontline’ portraying the character of Larry Hadges. In 2006, he was seen in a six part BBC Radio 4 sitcom called ‘Not Today, Thank You’ in which he portrayed the character of Nostrils. In 2008, Harry made the music CD “Songs of the Bush Men”. The recurring characters Shearer portrayed on ‘Saturday Night Live’ include -Tom Clay, a spokesman for several fake commercials on SNL and Vic Raker, a Weekend Update commentator.

In 1974, Shearer got married to Penelope Nichols. They got divorced in 1977. He next married Judith Owen, a singer songwriter. Harry Shearer attended UCLA and Harvard University. In May 2006, Goucher College awarded him as the honorary doctorate.

Shearer owns homes in Santa Monica, California and the Faubourg Marigny of New Orleans, Louisiana.
