Yeardley Smith grew up in Washington DC, US. Her mother Martha Mayor was a gallery worker and father, Joseph Yeardley ‘JY’ Smith was The Washington Post’s first official obituary editor. She belongs to an illustrious family and her great grandfather was marine biologist, chief curator of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and director of marine zoology studies for the Carnegie Institution. Her great-great-grandfather was the well known naturalist Alpheus Hyatt.

She voiced Lisa Simpson on ‘The Simpsons’. Smith also made appearances on the sitcoms Herman’s Head, Dharma and Greg and in 55 episodes of the Showtime sitcom Brothers. She guest-starred on Showtime Network’s ‘Dead Like Me’ and Disney Channel’s ‘Phil of the Future’ etc.

She guest appeared on ‘Teen Angel’, and the segment of the Children’s Television Workshop show ‘Square One’. She also appeared on an episode of ‘Mama’s Family’ as an escaped juvenile prisoner named “Bonita Rokeke”. Among her other film credits are ‘The Legend of Billie Jean’, ‘Heaven Help Us’, ‘City Slickers’, ‘Maximum Overdrive’ and ‘As Good as It Gets’. She auditioned for the role of Bart Simpson on ‘The Simpsons’ but got the role of Lisa instead. In 1992, Smith earned an Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for her work on The Simpsons. Her upcoming project ‘Waiting for Ophelia’, is to be released in early 2009.

In 2004, she performed her own one-woman show entitled ‘More’. In 1992, she got a Primetime Emmy Award but felt that it wasn’t worth anything.

Smith married Christopher Grove, an English-Canadian actor in 1990. They divorced each other in 1992. She next married Daniel Erickson in 2002 and has filed for divorce from him.

On ‘The Jane Pauley Show’, Smith herself admitted that she had struggled with bulimia for approximately 25 years.

Her other notable work include ‘The Simpsons Game’, ‘The Simpsons Movie’, ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’, ‘Back by Midnight’, ‘The Simpsons Road Rage’, ‘Just Write’, ‘As Good as It Gets’, ‘We’re Back!
